Sharing a project

Share a workspace with a friend for viewing or editing.

You can share a zizcode project with another zizhost user so they can view it, or build it with you, live. Sharing is friends-only: you can only share with people on your accepted friends list.

1. Add them as a friend

Visit the person’s profile (or the Friends page) and send a friend request. Once they accept, they show up in your share picker.

2. Share the project

In the editor, open the More menu and choose Share project. Search your friends list, pick the person, choose their access level, and share:

  • Can view: they can open and read the project and watch the preview, but not change files.
  • Can edit: they can edit files and folders alongside you.

3. Editing together, live

When two or more people have the same file open, you work on it at the same time. Everyone’s typing shows up for everyone else as it happens, with no turn-taking and nothing to merge by hand.

  • You’ll see each other’s cursors moving through the file, each with a colour and a name label, plus any text they have selected.
  • The editor bar shows a “2 editing” badge, where the number is how many of you are on that file. Click it to see who is there.
  • Changes save automatically. When everyone sees “saved”, the file is stored, including everyone’s latest edits. It means the same thing for all of you.

4. The preview server is shared too

You do not each start your own copy. When one person hits Start preview server, everyone in the project runs against the same preview, with all of your edits kept in sync on it.

  • It only counts against the person who started it, so if a friend started the preview on this project, you can still run your own preview on a different project at the same time.
  • It stays awake while anyone is working in it, up to the usual 2-hour limit.
  • The person who started it, or the project owner, can stop it. Everyone else stops watching by closing the tab.

5. Manage or remove access

The Share dialog lists everyone the project is shared with. Change someone’s access by re-sharing, or hit Revoke to remove access at any time. Only the project owner can manage sharing, push to hosting, or submit for review.

If you remove someone while they have the project open, they are told immediately that their access was removed, and the editor stops saving their changes.

Notes

  • Shared projects always run under the owner’s account, and the files belong to the owner.
  • Removing someone as a friend also removes their shares. Sharing tracks your current friends list.
